On Aug. 28, 2009 Mayor Villaraigosa commended the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites for being LA’s first hotel to reach the standards set by Green Seal, an independent, non-profit organization that partners with hotels and motels across the country in an effort to conserve resources, prevent pollution and minimize waste. The airport location, Westin Los Angeles Airport, has also received the Green Seal Silver Level certification. Since then, the smart people at Radisson Hotel at Los Angeles Airport earned themselves Green Seal’s Silver Level certification becoming the first hotel in the LAX corridor to go green. Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles Hotel followed suite and achieved Green Seal, Inc.'s Bronze Level certification, making the hotel one of less than a dozen Green Seal hotels in California. Not to be left behind, Hilton Los Angeles/ Universal City jumped in with a Bronze Green Seal of approval for their own eco-improvements including eco-friendly cleaning agents and an energy conservation program. Without stopping there, the city of Los Angeles continues to work with and encourage more hotels to go green. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa declared, “This is just a first step in our efforts to make Los Angeles a greener and healthier city not only for those who live here, but for the millions of people who visit our great city each year.”
"After years of effort, it's gratifying to see the first step in the City's Green Business Certification Program, the Green Hotels component, is now a reality," said Councilmember Richard Alarcón.
