In addition to having enough restaurants, shops and attractions to satisfy any type of visitor, central Hollywood doubles as a veritable movie backlot. From 1914's "The Squaw Man" -- Cecil B. DeMille's first film -- to 2008's Will Smith-starring "Hancock," the 25-block area of Hollywood roughly bounded by Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards to the north and south, and La Brea Avenue and Vine Street to the west and east, has been the site of hundreds, if not thousands, of film shoots.

With such a high concentration of film locations in the area, many local businesses have become essentially actors themselves because of their repeated use. Musso & Frank continues to portray the old-school restaurant with class, Boardner's is the sassy watering hole, Avalon Hollywood (formerly The Palace) dazzles as the music stage and Grauman's Chinese Theatre is the ultimate go-to locale for a movie scene requiring, well, a movie theater.

In addition to being largely walkable, the beauty of the area is that visitors can go to these still thriving businesses themselves and play their own part on the public stage.
