For golfers, vacationing often means hitting the links, and LA's pleasant year-round weather and fantastic array of public courses will thrill any golf fanatic.
LA's city-owned courses easily hold their own against members-only links. At Griffith Park, the Wilson and Harding municipal golf courses are historic 18-hole beauties that offer ultra-accessible LA golf experiences. The Wilson course welcomes recreational golfers with its forgivingly wide, tree-lined fairways. The Harding course is just as picturesque but tends to challenge and delight more-skilled players with its narrower fairways and somewhat-tricky greens. A clubhouse, putting green, driving range and restaurant serve both courses. Rancho Park Golf Course, the city's third set of 18 links, is one of the most popular in LA, and with good reason: it offers a great layout, scenic views and very reasonable green fees (for all three courses, green fees mostly range from $31 to $39, with discounts for children, seniors and afternoon tee times).
LA boasts several other public courses that are so phenomenal, you'll be shocked they don't require a king's ransom in country-club dues. Trump National Golf Club, for instance, lures aficionados with its gorgeous ocean views, challenging greens and luxurious amenities. Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms recently earned the well-deserved honor of being named the 2010 Golf Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association. It also won "Best Course-2010" by Southland Golf's 2010 Readers' Choice Awards for the Best of Southern California. Its famous two courses, "Babe" and "Ike," recently underwent extensive renovations that included a complete replacement of all fairways.
